Lyrics
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Turn away from your own kind
Why even preach?
What's there to teach?... No Reason
Pleasure aware of its own end
Won't see the color of the sun again
And it becomes a sort of rule
To focus on a picture of Youth
Why meditate on the Gore?
Turn away from the Score...
To another empty shore
Go Ahead,
There's no Reason to go
What corn could it grow?
What Paradise could it show?
BackStory
...I woke up around 6:30am in Denmark with my good friend who drives our bands on tour and was seized with the need to hear the song "Roman Candle" by Elliott Smith. I'd never listened to him much... but it seemed like the perfect thing to hear so early in the morning in a faraway place. I'd just moved to New York from Portland like Elliott had done before he eventually retreated to LA,, so maybe that was on my mind in the background. Using that and some songs on Bowie's 'Hunky Dory' as reference points, I felt like I'd never really released an upfront song with only finger picked acoustic guitar... so maybe that was the challenge,, to be somewhat uncovered for a song.
The chorus really drives the overall meaning home about the over-analyzaion of Pleasure... and the inability to grasp and hold it. ..but the song needed to end on an ambigious lyric... it'd just be a disservice to imply any solution at all...
